Blending Multiple Skies Together
Photography & Photoshop Course: Part 1
Using skies taken in the UK, I choose a sky to set the stormy mood, but draws the eye to the island by silhouetting the spire against a bright, clean area of sky. The high contrast and lines will grab the viewers’ attention, giving the viewers eye a place to start their journey.
Course Part 1 – Compositing
Blending is brushing one layer over another without regard to any hard edges in the subject. Painting one layer over another creates a perfect, seamless join. For example, brushing one part of the clouds into another, perfectly blending the two sky exposures together.

Adding Top Right Corner Clouds
Photography & Photoshop Course: Part 1
A second sky is used to add clouds with a more pleasing cohesive composition to the top half of the sky, while creating the circular motion in the clouds that lead the eye back to the hero. Sky is a backdrop, setting the story and mood, it must not overpower the main hero.
Course Part 1 – Compositing
Masking is joining two frames together using the hard edges in the subject. Most photographs need a major mask and often two additional masks derived from the main mask. Masks must be high quality to capture fine detail and create joins without artifacts like halos.

Adding Left & Right Horizon Clouds
Photography & Photoshop Course: Part 1
Extra sky is added to hide the artifacts, yet the correct scale and perspective to give the feeling of distance. Sky is the theatrical stage backdrop and lighting. Critical for setting the story, mood and design while making the hero stand out and look good. Be the focus point.
Course Part 1 – Compositing
Channel masks are covered because they are quick to make, easy to use and very accurate. A channel mask allows great tonal control and control over where the tones are applied. Being seamless and full tone, they do not create the problems luminosity masks can do.
