Modern Architectural Black and White Photography

Join me in ‘The City of Arts and Sciences’, Valencia, Spain for a full week of private, one-to-one tuition in black and white photography. Learn how to create bold and elegant black and white photography followed by learning the Photoshop retouching techniques for modern, architectural black and white photography. Composition is understanding where to stand; how objects interact with each other. The smallest movement of the camera position dramatically changes how objects align. In the condensed, modern architectural environment this subject is easily taught as the simplified architectural lines show the interactions more clearly than in the complexity and confusion of the landscape.

A Foundation in Good Photography

The foundation layer of all photographs is a black and white photograph; a color photograph is just a black and white photograph overlaid with color information. The black and white photograph is the tonal foundation layer that gives all your photographs structure, light, form, texture, spatial depth and three-dimensional quality. The ability to create great black and white photographs with these qualities and full of rich, black shadow detail, is the core skill to learn; that you then apply to any subject you shoot. The black and white workshops will teach you how to create all these universal and fundamental qualities from the correct exposure in the camera to the Photoshop retouching techniques.

Panoramic Heads and PTGui Stitching Software

All the black and white images shown on this page were taken with a panoramic head, shooting multiple rows with a Nikon D800E camera and a Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art lens. The images are raw converted in Nikon Capture NX-D software, then stitched with PTGui, panoramic image stitching software, followed by Photoshop retouching. While not essential to shoot with a panoramic head; a wide-angle lens can be used but creates perspective distortions in the black and white architectural images. Part of the black and white workshops is to teach you the complete panoramic process and PTGui software if you wish as an additional, free option. A technique I now use in the majority of my work.
