Why This Workshop Works.
The photographer’s greatest weakness is not their cameras and equipment, but their visual literacy: understanding how people perceive and respond to images, then using that knowledge to create successful images. The most common weakness is not knowing “How pictures work”, and lacking a consistent, repeatable workflow to “Create pictures that work”. Many photographers spend years in slow, painful trial‑and‑error learning – looking to photography for answers, not realising that photography doesn’t have the answers. – They don’t learn what they need.
I solve both issues: I teach visual literacy first, so you understand the principles behind good photography and then “The Art of Tonal Painting” workflow to apply those principles. – You acquire the knowledge for “How pictures work”, and a workflow to “Create pictures that work”. The workshop is a blend of science and art, which is why it works – its foundation is provable science-based principles, not personal opinion. One-to-one tuition means you only learn what works, at your own pace and leaves no knowledge gaps. – Knowledge that will last you a lifetime.
“You’re not starting from scratch. – I’m taking your photography further”.
It’s Validated by Science.
Human perception and pictures are governed by predictable scientific principles, not personal opinions. “The Art of Tonal Painting” is designed on those principles, which means the workflow naturally creates images that work. – Visual Attention Software generates a heatmap that shows where our eyes glance first – the viewer’s attention goes straight to the bright orange‑lit doorway. That is entirely intentional, not accidental; it’s the scientific basis behind “The Art of Tonal Painting” workflow and this workshop.

Create Professional Travel & Outdoor Masterpieces.
A Simple Plan for Fast Improvement.
Think of knowledge as a Pyramid. – At its base lies the most fundamental knowledge: understanding our human nature and perception: Visual principles, which explain “How pictures work”. Above that is the artistic knowledge, which explains “How to create pictures that work”. At the top is photography, and then post-production. Each level relies on the one below. – “The Art of Tonal Painting” workflow – is founded on the simple biological reality that human vision is hard-wired to prioritise tone over colour by the ratio of 20:1 – therefore, the workflow prioritises tone to create the underlying structural foundation first, then overlays that structure with colour information. – Science underpins the art.
The Four Module Structure.
The workshops are delivered in four modules, with each module unfolding in small steps, and each step has a logical, explainable reason. Add the four modules together to gain the entire workflow for creating professional travel and outdoor photography with “Artistic Vision & Style”. This holistic, methodical approach and slow logical progression means that no knowledge gaps are left, which will cause your photographs to fail. By default, “The Art of Tonal Painting” workflow creates a beautiful black-and-white image; unlike popular convention, the colour version is your “optional extra”. The workshop is designed to give photographers everything they need to create strong images now – not years later.
Module 1: Portfolio Critique First. – Identify The Problems.
The first aim is to identify your weaknesses. Establish which qualities are weak and missing in your images, understand why they’re important, and why they will improve your pictures. To do this, we cover visual literacy: the fundamental principles of good photography, then compare each principle to your images so you can self-diagnose the issues yourself and avoid repeating those mistakes in the future. – Improving your photography begins by identifying and understanding the problems first. – You need to understand what your weaknesses are and why.
Module 2: Establish The Goals. – Learn The Solutions.
We begin with a run-through of “The Art of Tonal Painting” workflow to help you understand the big picture and what’s possible. I explain the logic of the workflow and why it has a precise, structured order. Next, we cover the purpose of pictures and how to create a story. Then, how you can develop your own “Artistic Vision & Style” so that you tell that story in your own unique way. – We cover the importance of creating the rich black-and-white image first to create the illusion of reality, and then how to overlay that realism with your artistic transformation.
Module 3: Photography Technique. – Capture the Raw Files.
The first two modules cover principles; the next two cover production, and production starts with being in the right place at the right time to capture the correct raw material to create your picture. How to find, research, and plan pictures. How to previsualise what your composition could become as an artistic interpretation, then how to break down your composition into a set of exposures as Photoshop assets. – How to create photos even when time is limited, and conditions aren’t perfect. – A logical process for capturing the raw data to create pictures later.
Module 4: Photoshop Skills. – Create the Artistic Photograph.
The Photoshop workflow follows three phases: compositing, technical perfection, and artistic transformation. After compositing, we create a stunning black & white image and master the “Art of Tonal-Painting” technique that creates the “Rembrandt Light”. Then we concentrate on the colour overlay. The goal is to enhance the 3D form and spatial distance for realism, and enhance the light, mood, drama, and atmosphere to create a photograph that tells a story and evokes an emotional response. – To create beautiful, unique artistic statements you’re proud of.

What You Learn In The Workshop.
The workshop is taught in the same order that I use to create my images, and we follow the process from initial concept to final image. You don’t need to be an advanced Photoshop user – just be comfortable with the Photoshop interface and the basic working concepts of layers, groups, and masks. I will teach you everything else. I provide the workshop images because they have been selected for specific reasons, but time is allocated to work on your own images during the workshop. You receive a copy of all layered Photoshop files after every session, and keep a live video recording of every session as documentation, along with detailed workshop notes plus one year of free follow-up advice.

Who This Workshop Is For.
For Photographers Who Want More.
My workshops are for busy photographers who want one short, professional learning experience that quickly improves their photography, so they can enjoy creating higher‑quality images straight away. The workshop isn’t limited to those with experience, but only by attitude. I work with photographers who have passion, enthusiasm, and a genuine desire to improve, whether they’re intermediate or advanced. I choose not to teach groups because everyone starts at a different level and learns at a different pace. – The one-to-one approach means that I can focus all my time on one client, which provides a higher-quality service and greater benefits for my client; you learn more knowledge in less time.
Why My Workshop Is Different.
Most workshops focus on how you take photos, but not how pictures actually work. Others focus on imitation, encouraging you to replicate the tutor’s subjects and style. My approach is very different; it’s not superficial. I reveal the underlying principles of good photography: Visual literacy, and then I give you a workflow: “The Art of Tonal Painting”, to apply those principles. – The result is that you complete the workshop having acquired the visual knowledge and practical workflow to define your own photographic style while adhering to all the principles that define strong images. I don’t dictate your style. – I just give you the knowledge and tools for creative freedom and successful self-expression.
