Create 3D Form.
Create a three-dimensional illusion of reality.
The Masterclass Goal: Create the 3D Illusion of Reality.
Creating the illusion of three-dimensional form is a key factor in making an image engaging, as it convinces the brain that it’s seeing reality. Images with little three-dimensional form are perceived as two-dimensional graphic images, which the brain places a very low priority on because they only provide a small amount of useful information to help navigate the world around us. Because a photograph captures the three-dimensional world, it is assumed to convey a sense of three-dimensional form by default. – The problem is that the camera alters the tones, flattens the image and reduces the sense of form. We must manually enhance the sense of form to replace what the camera removed to create the illusion.
Benefits for your Photography.
1. Why it’s important to build a convincing illusion of form. The perception of form is one of the primary ways we navigate and make sense of the world around us. We engage most with reality, and two-dimensional graphic images or patterns less. The more we create a sense of form, the more we connect and engage with the image.
2. It influences your composition. Because the sense of three-dimensional form is so important and powerful in a picture, it influences where we stand and how we compose the picture. We need to compose images from a three-quarter position, where the main subject of our picture feels round, has volume and feels solid.
3. Why pictures fail. A common mistake photographers make is retouching photos in ways that contradict the science of how we perceive three-dimensional form. If, for example, we don’t enhance the form’s major planes, it will feel flat and lifeless. To create the three-dimensional form, we model the light to enhance the form.
4. Increase viewer engagement time. When you create a strong, compelling sense of three-dimensional form, you offer viewers a visual reward, encouraging them to explore your photograph longer and engage with its different layers and objects. It creates a sense of being lost in an artificial reality that is satisfying and enjoyable.
5. Light dictates form. We can’t create what we didn’t shoot, but we can enhance what we did shoot. Three-dimensional form is a quality created by light; therefore, form is dictated by the time of day we shoot. Creating images with a strong three-dimensional illusion of form dictates where and when we stand to take our picture.
